New domain - domain user cannot login to a workstation, admin can.

I have a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller that I am testing. This is the first client I am joining and it is my laptop. I do not have DNS configured yet. I added the IP of the new DC to the preffered DNS server and after that I was able to join the machine to the domain.

Now my issue is when I try to login with my active directory username and password I get the error :

"The sign in method you are trying to use is not supported."

I am able to login with the new domain admin account though. The client/laptop in question is windows 8.1. The admin account can login because I have a GPO deployed to allow local login for the domain admin...

I have read online this is an issue only with windows 8. To resolve it they suggest adding the user or group having login problems to the policy to allow local login...this seems quite strange is this...
