I have this scenario:
- 1x Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controller (Standard Evaluation License)
- KMS host key
The situation is that I want to activate a simple Windows DC server which is already configured for production but has only the Standard Evaluation license (long story). Now we want to activate the DC properly i.e. change from Evaluation license to proper KMS host, but we can't simply change the server's licensing by changing the product key as usual, for the sole reason that there is a domain controller installed on the server (Microsoft doesn't allow this for some reason).
Now I had this idea: Set up another Windows Server 2012 R2 machine, activate it properly using the KMS key and then join/dcpromo the server to the same forest as the already configured DC. This will make the new machine a second DC in the domain and...
