AD Domain Issues

I have an AD network that "had" 2 DC's. Server01 (windows server 2003), and Server02 (windows server 2012).

The network was in place long before I started working here.

My issue is a number of things, combination of stupidity on my part and poor network planning whenever the domain was built.

1.) Originally, all I wanted to do was rename the domain from site.com to site.local using rendom. I went through all the steps, up until I started receiving errors about the server1 couldn't be contacted and blah blah. (keep this in mind, because I never canceled the rendom)

2.) So I then passed all the FSMO roles to server02without any issues. Proceeded to demote Server01, and got connection errors to the domain when trying to demote. So I forced removed it "dcpromo /forceremoval" That completed successfully.
