Why can't I log onto my new DC?

My home environment has a 2008 r2 level domain, two DC's, one functioning as DHCP as well.

I added a 2012r2 DC to the mix, transferred DHCP to that server, demoted one of the 2008 r2 DC's, removed DNS from it.

FSMO roles have all been transferred to the new DC.

I changed my DHCP scope to point at the new DC as primary, other 2008r2 as secondary. Replication seems to be ok, the DC is in the domain controllers OU, however when I went to demote the other DC I got this message:

I hit no, cancelled, shut down the DC, and left the new one on. I was unable to log into any machines on the domain, message being there are no logon servers to handle the request.

I turned back on the 2008r2 DC, and I can log back in.

I've checked through DNS, verified the new server is with the original one in DNS,

I'm honestly not sure were to look now.
