When I elevate an AD-sourced account to Admin status, their AD PW doesn't work

I've successfully connected to AD, and Spiceworks auto-imported all the user accounts.

Now when I elevate an account to Admin or Helpdesk Admin status, that account can't log in to the back end interface with their AD credentials. 

They can still log in to the user portal with their AD credentials.

What am I missing here? Do I need to enable write permissions back to AD (currently off)?
